About the DCM

The Materials Characterization Department (DCM) is located at Centro Atómico Bariloche (CAB), which belongs to the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA). It is part of the Applied Investigation Management, which in turn belongs to the Applications of Nuclear Technology Area Management (GAATEN).

The DCM has a trajectory of over 30 years in the study of thermodynamic, physical and chrystalochemical properties of complex oxides, of academic and technological relevance.

The first studies were carried out in nuclear related oxides. Later, different high Tc superconducting cuprates systems, as well as perovskite structured manganites , which present magnetoresistance, were studied.

Generally speaking, and depending on the problem, the DCM's work consists of the development, synthesis and characterization of oxides, the resolution of the high temperature phase diagram through the determination of the oxygen chemical potential, the high temperature defect structure through thermogravimetric and transport measurements and the influence and correlation of the defect structure with the magnetic and transport properties.

In the beginning of the 2000's the DCM's activities began to diversify. New areas were incorporated, such as studies of mixed conducting materials (ionic and electronic), magnetic properties of transition metal nano-wires prepared through eletrochemical techniques, and composite materials and fibers, which include the development of a pilot plant for the fabrication of special industrial parts, like reinforced pistons with alumina fibers using the squeeze casting method.

Summarizing, it can be said that the group’s activities range from basic research and human resources formation to services to third parties and technological transfer.
